Pick of the Week - Basil

"A fabulous herb that is annual. The plant dies off in early winter and comes to life again in Spring. There are many different varieties, green being the most common. Basil loves warmer weather to grow and so becomes plentiful in late spring and early summer.

This year, summer was late arriving so we are getting a huge supply a little later than normal. This would be the week to make your pesto sauce for the year, we are definitely doing it up at our farm.

An absolute essential in Italian cooking! The best results come from adding the herb towards the end of the cooking process. Basil is on special at all Harris Farm stores in NSW this week. "

 David Harris

HOW TO PICK

When buying fresh basil, look for bright green leaves that are not browning or dried on the edges.

HOW TO STORE

Pick the leaves off the stems and lay them in a single layer on a paper towel. Roll up the towel around the leaves and put the roll in a plastic bag. This method keeps the leaves hydrated but not wet or damp. Of course, if you have purchased one of our swag bags this would keep even better.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Cooler nights (at last) is starting to slow the vegetable supply a little. We do have a massive amount of really top-quality Basil in the NSW stores, and these will be a bargain this week. It would be great week to make pesto!
Broccolini is still plentiful and will bring down the broccoli price by the weekend. Telegraph cucumbers are very well supplied, and prices will ease here as the week goes on.
Other bargains include Sweet Delight tomatoes, net red caps and 1 kg carrots. Cauliflowers which have bounced up and down over the past few weeks look like easing again as well.

In Fruit

Shepard avocados continue to be well supplied and really good quality. Grapes are really eating well. I can’t go past those big stacks of loose Autumn Crisp grapes without grabbing one off the stack, I love them and now having the Candy Crunch for a fantastic eating black grape as well, is a wonderful option.
Chestnuts are now in season and we will have truckloads arriving for Easter. Lemons are always in high demand for seafood as we approach Easter and supplies are in full swing to meet this demand.

Imperfect and premium Williams pears are inexpensive and the other pear varieties are also starting to become available.”
