Honey Roasted Brown Onions



Prep time: 10 minutes 

Cooking time: 40 minutes 

Serves: 4 

Ingredients:

  • 4 Brown Onions  
  • 5 Sprigs Thyme  
  • 80g Butter  
  • 1 tbsp Honey  
  • ¼ Cup White Wine or Vegetable Stock  
  • Salt
  • Pepper 

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C.

  2. Begin by preparing the onions. Remove the outer skin and cut them into 1cm thick slices.

  3. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and arrange the onion slices on it.

  4. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, honey, and thyme sprigs. Stir until the butter melts completely and then add the white wine or vegetable stock. Mix well and turn off the heat.

  5. Brush half of this flavorful mixture over the onion slices on the baking tray.

  6. Place the tray in the preheated oven and roast for 20 minutes.

  7. After 20 minutes, carefully remove the tray from the oven and brush the remaining butter mixture over the onions.

  8. Return the tray to the oven and roast for an additional 20 minutes or until the onions become tender and caramelised.

  9. Once done, take the roasted onions out of the oven. Be sure to peel off the outer skin from the onions and discard it.

  10. Serve the hot roasted onions as a delightful side dish.

  • Roasted onions pair wonderfully with grilled meats, vegetables, or roasted chicken.
  • Feel free to experiment with additional herbs, spices, or caramelised vinegar to customise the flavour to your liking.
