Classic Negroni

A negroni in a cut glass tumbler on a chopping board surrounded by oranges, a strainer and a stirrer

One of the simplest cocktails to make, as well as being a bona fide classic. A good negroni is all about balance.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: none

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 30ml dry gin
  • 30ml sweet vermouth
  • 30ml Campari
  • Ice
  • Slice of orange to garnish, halved

Method

  1. Start with a large ice cube (or ball) in a heavy tumbler.
  2. Pour over equal parts gin, vermouth and Campari.
  3. Stir briskly
  4. Squeeze the peel of the orange slice over the drink to release essential oils, then add to the glass.

Cook's Note:

A classic negroni is stirred, not shaken. You can make it in the glass, or in another vessel before straining over the ice chilling your glass.

A great negroni is one served over a very large pieces of ice - to chill the glass and, most importantly, to prevent melting ice diluting your drink.
