Pick of the Week - Summer Berries

Pick of the Week - Summer Berries

My pick of the week is the beautiful summer berries available in our stores this week. We have the first blackberries, and possibly my absolute favourite, the boysenberries now available. With boysenberries don’t be concerned if there is a little juice in the bottom of the punnet, that shows they are ripe and ready to go. Without that they are not really ripe enough to enjoy their full flavour.

Various other berries such as young berries and loganberries will also appear intermittently over the next ten days or so.  Our more common berries are now mostly coming from down south with really only blueberries coming from NSW. Personally with both blueberries and strawberries I believe our separate premium product is well worth the extra money, as opposed to buying the supermarket type berries where you pretty much get what you pay for.

In strawberries the two larger packs; the 400g clear pack marked ‘Majestic' is nearly two regular punnets by weight, and the two kg open tray with the stalks still on the fruit (equivalent of 8 punnets) are absolutely unbelievable to eat. They are sweet full fleshed fabulous fruit. They won’t be around for long and will be perfect for Christmas lunch or to serve at parties. Neither pack is cheap, but for the amount of super premium fruit you are buying I don’t think they are dear either.

As well most of the raspberries this week will come from either Victoria or Tasmania and they are superb. Until a couple of years ago raspberries used be horrendously dear by Christmas but that no longer seems to be the case. So for breakfast, dessert or just to snack on, its summer berries this week!
