Pick of the Week - Imperial Mandarins

Cream bowl of imperial mandarins with 3 that have been peeled.

As regular as clockwork, May has brought on Imperial Mandarins. They are terrific to eat because they are sweet and juicy (Tip; don’t go for really big fruit especial late in the season – it has a tendency to be dry). The skin is easy to peel and there aren’t too many seeds making it the perfect lunchbox item.

At this time, the fruit comes from around Gayndah about 4 hours north-west of Brisbane. Later in the year, the crop will move down south but for me, this Queensland fruit is hard to beat. We’ve got a mile of imperfect fruit with small blemishes on the skin at the moment so prices are fantastic, and they eat just like their perfect cousins! You can even pick up a bulk bargain with full cases available for sale in all stores.
