Pick of the Week - Granny Smith Apples

My pick this week is Granny Smith apples. They are not nearly as popular now as they were some years ago. They are still the best apple to cook with, be it pies or apple sauce, they are just the best!

There is a far wider selection of apple varieties today than a decade or two ago and many people of my generation grew up with Grannies as their main apple. They are definitely not as sweet as some of the newer apples but still a very good apple. They are always better eating after April and are now at their best! On special in all our stores this week!

HOW TO PICK
Choose firm, brightly coloured apples. The flesh of the apple should not give way to finger pressure.

HOW TO STORE
Store apples away from direct sunlight, preferably in the fridge. Place them in a plastic bag to help keep them juicy and firm. If you prefer eating apples at room temperature, simply remove a few from the fridge each day. Don't store apples with pears or avocados as they produce a natural gas that speeds the ripening of those fruits.
