Pick of the Week - New Season Jonathon Apples

Pick of the Week - New Season Jonathon Apples

Autumn has arrived, and with that an old fashioned apple that I love - the Jonathon. These were the most common early apple in Australia prior to the development of the now very popular and even earlier maturing Gala. Gala is originally from New Zealand and been very popular there for nearly 100 years. We only have Jonathons for about 6 weeks each year, and now is their time. First fruit is from Bilpin, they were not so good however the fruit is now being harvested fresh and straight to market every day from both Batlow and Orange. So a NSW apple, only here for a short time and now at their best.

HOW TO PICK
Choose firm, brightly coloured apples. The flesh of the apple should not give way to finger pressure.

HOW TO STORE
Store apples away from direct sunlight, preferably in the fridge.
