Pick of the Week - Grape Tomatoes

Grape Tomatoes

My pick this week is grape tomatoes. As I mentioned last week, it's most unusual that these snacking tomatoes are so inexpensive in the depths of winter.

Grape tomatoes originated in South East Asia and started appearing in big numbers around 20 years ago and are now more popular than cherry tomatoes. They are more oval shaped where the cherry tomatoes are more round.

Very high in natural sugars and small in size, they are fantastic to snack on, in salads or roasted. High in vitamin C and phosphorus, rich in Lycopene... they are not only good for whatever dish you are preparing but good for you too. Bargain price in our stores this week

HOW TO PICK
Look for brightly coloured red tomatoes with firm, shiny skin. Turn the punnet upside down to check fruit is fresh looking throughout.

HOW TO STORE
Although we do not encourage refrigerating tomatoes as doing so has the tendency to reduce flavour and ability to ripen well, you may store grape tomatoes in their punnet in the crisper for up to two days. Bring to room temperature before using.
