We have fantastic washed potatoes at a bargain price in all stores this week. They are branded Bellita, but are actually the Almera variety. They are a large oval shaped yellow flesh potato grown in the Riverland in South Australia. The growers in South Australia love growing them because they require less water than other varieties.
HOW TO PICK
When buying potatoes, look for those that are firm with even coloured skin. Try to avoid spongy or wrinkled potatoes, or those with green patches.
HOW TO STORE
Potatoes are best stored in a cool dry place away from sunlight, in paper or hessian bags (the bottom of the pantry or kitchen cupboard is ideal). Washed potatoes will last best if kept in the fridge. Don’t store your potatoes next to onions as this will make them deteriorate more quickly. Potatoes should last about a week if kept in these conditions.
