My pick this week is green beans. Both the machine picked and handpicked beans are well supplied this week, and the quality is exceptionally good. Excellent growing conditions have lead to strong volumes for this time of the year. Handpicked beans are from Gympie (Queensland), arguably the premier bean growing district in Australia. My all time favourite way to have green beans is with cherry tomatoes - partially boil the beans then toss with cherry tomatoes in a buttery basil sauce… sensational.
HOW TO PICK
Pick the beans with a vibrant bright green colour, avoid darker looking beans and beans with blemishes or large swollen pods. Fresh beans of good quality should be slim and crisp, and should snap when broken.
Store unwashed, in a plastic bag in the fridge or crisper, and use within 4 days.
