Dave's Market Update
In Veg
“We have a couple of the popular Winter/late Autumn vegies arriving in quantity and so prices are starting to ease. A favourite in our family is fennel, you can bake them or use in salads, the quality is fantastic and quite a price drop from last week.
The other big drop is in brussel sprouts which are now a trendy veg not something hated by all kids. New varieties of these are much sweeter than the brussels of ten years ago. Back in price and will come back further as the month goes on. As well celery has continued to fall and in fact is quite cheap again. Broccolini is also well supplied this week.”
In Fruit
“Quinces which are my pick of the week are now at their best and very well priced this week. Large Hass avocados are also very inexpensive and great value. For something different try a feijoa this week. At our farm we are making jam from them mixed with blackberries and the jam is absolutely delicious.
Mandarins are still fantastic quality including our imperfect range. Pink Lady apples are plentiful and flavorful plums are fantastic eating. With pears this week we will start with Packhams and finish the Williams variety. These will take a lot longer to ripen. I strongly suggest you store them out of the fridge until they start to ripen.
Apples are all really good and in citrus we will finish the imports and move into Queensland fruit as the week progresses. These will look pale compared to the old season USA fruit but are eating well. Gold kiwi is still not cheap however it is now eating superb. I think they are a good substitute for berries which are not keeping all that well at the moment."
