Dave's Market Update
In Veg
"We have a couple of excellent potato options in all our stores this week. We have 2kg bags of red washed potatoes at a very attractive price and 1kg cocktail potato bags. These cocktails only get down to these prices very rarely and are young, tasty and very tender. Basil is still cheap, however a lot of other vegetables are difficult to harvest until the ground dries up a bit. We certainly don’t want any more rain for a while
In Fruit
Still lots of old season avos about. In NSW we have both Reeds (still the best eating I think) and Hass. In Qld we have Hass and Shepards, they are all great value. Apples are becoming a primary focus for the industry with Ambrosia, Jazz and Bravos all coming on. About the only apple missing are new season Pink Ladies, any stock in stores now are nearly a year old, I am pretty sure I would prefer a crisp new season apple myself. The new pinks are only a week or two away.
In pears we are pushing those sweet little Corella pears, they are just so good eating. Our berries everywhere copped massive damage from the incredible rain over the whole east coast last week and it will take a couple of months for those crops to recover. Plums are a great option to berries, our September Candy variety are eating superbly still. Finally grapes are really good and in citrus we have excellent imperfect Ruby grapefruit and the first of the new season Imperial mandarins on sale.”

Dave's Pick of the Week
“Like most of Australia’s pears, our Corella Pears come from the Goulburn Valley. They are a smaller, sweeter pear that are a fantastic addition to your cheese plate! The only reason that some are Imperfect is because they don’t have the full red blush that premium pears of this variety have, usually because they have come from a shadier part of the tree.
They will keep well in the fridge and should be eaten a little soft to enjoy the full, sweet, flavour they are known for. We have a mixture of premium and imperfect Corellas on special in all our stores this week. You will rarely see them as cheap as we have them this week in our stores!”
HOW TO PICK
Corella pears ripen quickly, once they start developing a touch of yellow they will be ready to eat in a day or two.
HOW TO STORE
Store at room temperature in a fruit bowl. When they start to ripen store them in the fridge to prolong their life. Doing this should see them last 3 to 4 days.
