Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Cherries - 6 November

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

"Truss tomatoes and Lebanese cucumbers continue to be very well priced and we are starting to get some real salad weather to take advantage of that. Imperfect zucchini are a bargain they just grow and grow in this weather.

We are seeing hand picked bean supplies increase and this will lead to some great specials by this weekend. Telegraph cucumber prices have eased and shallots are a bargain. As well as truss all other snacking tomatoes are well supplied and every store will have one or another of these on special."

In Fruit

"There is beautiful summer fruit on offer this week at Harris Farm. Surprisingly for this early in the season we are seeing beautiful cherries on offer and the price is close to half where it was one week ago. They are fantastic quality , hope this continues through the season.

Mangoes are having another fantastic run this week , the Katherine season , which are regarded as the best of the territory mangoes , are absolutely in full swing , the weather is perfect and the fruit is fabulous.

The other highly recommended product are our Australian white grapes which we are selling in bags, the USA  fruit we are selling loose. This Aussie fruit is as good an eating fruit as I have tasted. It won’t be long before imported grapes will be a thing of the past.

Other fruit to look for include lychees (at last), avocados and there is some excellent well priced papaya.  We are dipping our toes in the water with nectarines peaches and apricots, and these will just get better every week."

Dave's Pick of the Week - Cherries

Its very unusual for me to select cherries as my pick of the week any tie before early December let alone the first week of November. The last few years the cherries have been terrible in November, this year they are fantastic .

We are enjoying new varieties of this most fabulous fruit plus near perfect growing conditions. Our sales are fantastic the fruit is crunchy and tasty and whilst not huge is a decent size. This is pretty much what we aspire to in December in previous years. Give them a go you will be very pleasantly surprised .
