Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Brussels Sprouts - 17 July 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Another good week for veggies. Best specials are snow peas, great price and fantastic quality! As well, premium Brussels sprouts are really at their best. They love the cold weather and are at their absolute best this week.

Truss tomatoes have fallen in price, however, for me it’s hard to go past the Imperfect Pick tomatoes for value. Celery remains cheap and really nothing is dear. Enjoy!"

In Fruit

"Again this week, our focus is on winter berries. They are all superb quality. Be it raspberries, strawberries, blues or blacks. None are really what I would call cheap yet. We need 28-degree days in the growing areas to bring that on. At the same time, none are dear either.

Apples remain good value particularly Pink Ladies and in pears which are quite dear, look to our Imperfect Packham pears for a bargain. Papaya is starting to fall in price and will be on special this weekend.”

Dave's Pick of the Week - Brussels Sprouts

"My pick this week is Brussels sprouts. It is a very old-fashioned vegetable that has done a marvellous job of reinventing itself. In my childhood, bitter-tasting Brussels were something most kids despised. Now with smaller, sweeter varieties, this vegetable has become immensely popular.

Prepared in combination with salmon, bacon, and a myriad of other options - there would hardly be a trendy restaurant in Sydney that does not have them at some stage on their winter menu!

Remarkably high in vitamin C, they are a Brassica and part of the cabbage family, and absolutely one of our most popular winter vegies. Most veg is very dear this week, but Brussels are half last week’s price in all HFM stores. It will keep in the fridge for 3 or 4 days."
