Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Broccoli - 6 March 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Best news with veg this week is the big fall in the price of broccoli. It’s half the price of last week. Ours is from Tasmania, where the weather is cooler ensuring the quality is better than the mainland product at the moment.

Our other fantastic special across the company is Dutch Cream potatoes, superb quality and at a red-hot price. Not a lot else has changed, all cucumbers remain cheap and life goes on!

In Fruit

A couple of new entries on the fruit list this week. Longans are an Asian favourite with a short season for Australian grown fruit (which is by far the best eating) and they are coming into season now.  With religious festivals this week we are promoting fresh dates in a 454-gm packet.

We have excellent quality Reed avocados, very well priced available this week. They will far exceed the new season Shepard avocados that are starting to appear on supermarket shelves because a lot of this new season fruit is still immature.

Natural sultanas are a very old-fashioned sweet grape in our stores this week. As well, we have some absolutely superb quality large size premium white grapes that are way cheaper than last week, I don’t think white grapes come any better.

In berries, blues are between seasons and very dear however raspberries are very good value. Time to think about plums, not peaches and nectarines which are always doubtful this late in the season. We still have some Tegan Blues in store and Queen Garnets and we will transition to West Australian Flavour Falls over the weekend, all very good eating plums.

In apples, stick to the new season now (Gala and sweet Tango), the grannies and Pink Ladies though still eating well are getting a bit long in the tooth for my liking. The Williams pears are still very good and cheap!”

Dave's Pick of the Week

“Broccoli from Tasmania is coming into some good volumes this week. Heat on the mainland has had an impact on vegetable crops but the moderate climate in Tasmania is perfect for growing vegetables.

On special in all stores, the quality is fantastic and the price is almost half of last week's!”

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK

Look for broccoli with bright green heads and compact clusters of the broccoli florets. Avoid broccoli that appears to have woody stems or those with yellow florets.

HOW TO STORE
