Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - 10hr Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder - 27 March 2024

Dave Market Update 27 March 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Fruit

“As always, there is enormous demand for lemons and limes over Easter. Both are excellent quality and very well priced. Terrific Easter for avocados with three varieties; two old season, Hass and Reeds and now Shepards are rolling too. I prefer the Hass myself for flavour. It’s rare we still have this line in April.

The terrific large rockmelons are still with us this week and in some cases even cheaper. Those special loose white seedless are still available, marginally dearer than last week especially in NSW. The cheaper smaller grape is our bags of red seedless, a very good but smaller grape.

For apples, I recommend Kanzi apples. We have discontinued peaches and nectarines; I still see them in the supermarkets…be very careful is all I can say. Far better you purchase plums and our imperfect variety this week are October Suns, cheap, good to eat and just a bit on the small side. For a bigger plum (much dearer), we have two or three other varieties at double or more the price.

In Veg

As we move into the change of seasons, there is enough of most veg lines but virtually nothing is oversupplied enough to effect prices.

Lebanese cucumbers continue to be cheap and excellent quality. Prepack carrots are great value and broccolini has eased enough to see more attractive retail tickets.

There are good quantities of all the herbs we use over Easter to feed family and friends.”

Dave's Pick of the Week

“As those of you who read our newsletter would be aware I write every week about the fruit and veg we sell, what is good, sometimes what avoid, but always fruit or veg.

This week, I would like to diverge from that and recommend a new meat product that we have just started to sell. The product is a ten-hour slow roasted shoulder of lamb from the Stanley Street Kitchen in the Victorian Goldfields. All the work has been done for you, it just needs to go in the oven or in a barby for 45 minutes and its ready to go. It is moist, tender and ready to go.

These shoulders are right up there with our premium products, think KP mangoes, Mountain Blueberries and Heirloom tomatoes. Easily found in our meat section, they are in a blue cardboard box. The packet says serves 4 to 6. Our experience at home is if it is served to four then four eats the lot! It’s that good! This product would be fantastic to feed the family over Easter. Give
them a go, you won’t be disappointed!”
