Dave's Market Update - 30.11.21

In Fruit:

First the bad news: our cherries are really getting hammered with this rain; it's looking grim for most mainland cherries this year. Now the good news: lychees are the best eating large fruit this week; very sweet and with a small seed! Find them in all stores this week. These lychees appear much dearer than the supermarket variety, but in fact the small seed means that what you get to consume, per kg, is actually very similar in price.

Papaya, mangoes, bananas and topless pines remain very well supplied and inexpensive. We have both blackberries and Imperfect pink lady apples at a bargain price for the week. Again, nectarines and peaches are both good value. This week, I think it’s the yellow nectarines that are the best eating.

In Veg:

Another very tough week with vegetables this week. The rain is now seriously interfering with harvests across the country. Luckily, there are still lots of snacking tomatoes, telegraph cucumbers and Lebanese cucumbers around; all of which are grown in glasshouses and thus protected from extremes of weather. One very hardy local Sydney basin vegetable that is plentiful this week is rhubarb, it’s a bargain in all Harris Farm stores this week!
