Dave's Market Update 11.03.2014

IN FRUIT

Very soon we will commence the Australian Kiwi Fruit season. In preparation for this our suppliers are very keen to quit the imported product which is from Italy at this stage. Hence Kiwi this week will be about half last week’s price, so get a bargain whilst you can. Brook mangoes continue to arrive at the markets in large quantities. A lot of consumers shy away from these because of the green skin that characterises the fruit, but in fact we eat them in this condition. Look for a yellow tinge and feel for soft fruit and they will be ripe and ready to eat. Rockmelons continue to be fantastic to eat and very good value and raspberries are my pick of the berries this week. Most grapes are fantastic and Tegan Blues remain my plum of the week.

IN VEGETABLE

Tomatoes are very dear this week, however grape tomatoes represent exceptional value. Cheaper and tastier than Truss tomatoes, they are absolutely delicious - and they are grown locally in the Sydney Basin by the Ngov, family. Not so good is the news on the potato front where recent hot weather is still hurting supply of all the washed potatoes both white and red. Stick to the old brushed potatoes - they hold up well in the heat, are by far the most attractively priced of all potatoes and very versatile in how you can prepare them. Good supplies of carrots, celery, squash, beans, kumera and all pumpkin still leave an array of options for a bargain at Harris Farm.
