Pick of the Week - Lychees

“My pick this week is lychees. There are many different varieties of lychees and while they all look similar, they are actually not.

The varieties we are selling are very unlikely to be found in the major supermarkets. They are low yielding, small seed varieties that are grown in very limited quantities for the specialty market. They cost around double what we refer to as the 'supermarket varieties' which are purely grown for yield and hence sell price. When comparing these varieties, our fruit has a far smaller seed and most of the sell price difference revolves around the fact that you are buying more edible flesh and instead of a gigantic seed. They are sweeter, and better to eat than the more common, old-fashioned varieties.

We will have a great range of these in 1 and 2 kg boxes leading up to Christmas.”

Dave's Market Update

Christmas Trees

“The Christmas trees are looking amazing this year. Our trees are grown in Irrewarra, about an hour southwest of Melbourne. The moderate climate down there produces the best quality Christmas trees. With excellent growing conditions this year’s trees are fantastic in size and shape. This weekend is the perfect weekend to launch the festive season.”

In Veg

“Again, perfect growing conditions are prevailing, and we have fantastic veg options in store. Broccolini is top quality and inexpensive. We have an incredible bargain coming in shallots this weekend in both Sydney and Brisbane this weekend. They could not get any cheaper and stored in the crisper drawer and particularly in one of our swag bags - they will keep for Christmas.

We have nets of red capsicums, a less attractive line at well below the price of the premium loose option on our stacks.  Fennel is easing in price and the glut of tomatoes continues unabated. It’s hard to plan specials with these tomatoes as the quality is varying enormously with the humidity so we are not committing to any stock without seeing it first.

Finally, our last delivery of fresh Christmas trees will be this weekend. So, if you are planning to buy one, I wouldn’t leave that much after Sunday.”

In Fruit

“It’s that time of the year when for a short time we get the very best lychees of the year in our stores. These small seed, very sweet lychees never find their way into our major supermarkets. They are low yield and high priced. However, the very small seed means the actual flesh you get per kg of fruit is far higher, so they work out to be not that much dearer than the lesser fruit.

The other interesting thing we have happening this week is that our all Australian limes are either at or near half the price of premium lemons, quite a lot of which are imported from the United States. So my family will be using Aussie limes from now until the new year, it just makes sense.

Another favourite of mine is the Reed avocados that HFM specialises in at this time of the year. Not dissimilar to our lychees. At first glance, these appear to be expensive, however, again this variety has a much smaller seed than the Hass variety we have been enjoying. Kilo for kilo, they are in fact great value and to me a nutty delicious flavour.

The white grapes are fantastic again and KP mangoes now from Qld are great eating. In berries, the pick is both strawberries and blueberries. In both peaches and nectarines this week, the yellow varieties are the better of the two and imperfects are great value.

This is a very good week for apricots and this week sees the rival variety being our imperfect choice - they are fantastic eating and cheap.
