Pick of the Week - Imperial Mandarins

“It has been an early start to the Queensland Imperial Mandarin season. The crop this year looks to be particularly good. The first mandarins of the year are the Imperial variety from Central Queensland around the Gayndah district.

The Imperial are a medium sized mandarin, easy to peel, and don’t have a lot of seeds. Hence, they are extremely popular in the school lunch box. One mandarin contains nearly double your daily requirement of vitamin C. To me, none of the many other varieties of mandarins eat like an Imperial; they are stand alone, the best!

After May, we move south for these beauties and the season extends to about the middle of August some years, but not always. I am convinced the best fruit most years is the Queensland fruit. I prefer to buy the medium sized fruit as it is less likely to be dry. Avoid fruit with black marks like a stain on the skin -  this generally means it’s immature fruit that has been gassed to colour it.”

- David Harris

HOW TO PICK
For a juicier imperial mandarin, pick fruit which feels heavy for its size, has glossy skin and is softer to touch. Avoid fruit that is rock hard and does not yield a little to pressure.

HOW TO STORE
Store in a cool place for up to a week. If you would like to keep them longer, store in the fridge.

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

Not a lot happening on this front. We do have very good line of 1 kg prepack small, washed potatoes that are great value. Telegraph cucumbers are the best cucumber option. Most vegetables are a similar price to last week.”

-David Harris

In Fruit

“The most exciting news this week is the big drop in Mandarins. These new season Imperial mandos from QLD are around half last week’s price and now eating well. Lemons which are a staple for Easter are really well supplied, inexpensive and of course a necessity for the Easter seafood meals.

Chestnuts have come back in price, try them for an Easter. Imperfect Fuyu are plentiful and fantastic eating grapes abound. The new season Kiwi Gold are delicious and not expensive.

For avocados, I think stick with the Shepards at this stage. There are quite a few Hass now in the market, they are still a bit immature and I don’t think you will enjoy eating them.
