DAVE'S PICK OF THE WEEK

Roma Tomatoes

"This week, a flush from glasshouses in the Sydney basin has created an opportunity for Roma Tomatoes (also known as egg tomatoes) to be at very good value.
Roma tomatoes are a red and firmer-skinned tomato with a sweet, juicy flesh, used both fresh and for processing. They tend to be oblong in shape (hence the nickname egg tomatoes) and heavy for their size. Usually they are dearer than gourmets, but this week they will be the best value of all the tomatoes!
They are highly nutritious, sweet and delicious due to their natural sugars content, sucrose and fructose. They are a good source of vitamin C and supply some vitamin E, folate and dietary fibre.”
HOW TO PICK
Select those which are bright red for immediate use.

HOW TO STORE
Ripen and store at room temperature until they are brightly coloured and slightly soft. We do not encourage refrigerating tomatoes as it will reduce the flavour and ability to ripen well.

DAVE'S MARKET UPDATE

In Veg

“Our really attractive special this week is new season Roma tomatoes, a fantastic product at a fantastic price. Lots of great snacking tomatoes, different lines in the different shops lots grown locally in the Sydney basin as are the Roma tomatoes in the NSW shops. I think my pick of the snacking tomatoes are the Sugar plum variety, they are delicious.

Lebanese cucumbers continue to be cheap, I used to pay more for them 30 years ago. Other well priced lines are beans, asparagus again and cauliflowers. So, plenty to choose from this week.”

In Fruit

“Still plenty of really good Katherine KP mangoes in stores this week. We have some other varieties; however, the majority of our customers prefer the flavour of the KPs. These will come to an end soon and we will move to Queensland for supply.
In stone fruit, the early peaches and nectarines are now eating well. The premium fruit is quite expensive however there are good imperfect options in both the peaches and the nectarines.

My pick of the berries this week is our blackberry offer, not particularly cheap but certainly not dear either. Lychees are good and our bag line of Australian white seedless grapes are fantastic.

Better eating apricots have started and prices are easing again particularly in the imperfect option."
