My pick this week is seedless watermelon. NSW is going to swelter this weekend and early next week, making it ideal to grab a slice of cold cut watermelon from the fridge. If you wish to keep melon more than a couple of days, it is always better to buy a whole melon. At HFM, we appreciate that a whole melon is less work for us and so we will always discount the whole product price compared to cut. At this stage and for the next few weeks, the melons grow in far North Queensland and transport makes up a big part of the total cost of the product. Years ago, we did not have melon until later in summer, however we now source melons 12 months of the year from the Northern Territory in mid winter through to NSW and the irrigation area in summer. The weather is perfect to enjoy excellent quality melon at a somewhat cheaper price than it has been for some months.
HOW TO PICK
Look for fruit with smooth skin, free from brown patches. It should sound hollow when tapped.
HOW TO STORE
Store out of direct sunlight for up to one week. Once cut, cover and store in the fridge for up to three days.
