As occurred last year, the Queensland strawberry season is suddenly in full swing earlier than we would normally expect. The fruit is excellent, full of flavour and very attractively priced. Most of this fruit is grown in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, where the nights are cold and the days warm. These strawberries keep very well compared to the southern fruit we have just finished. Don’t forget to take them out of the fridge a good half an hour before you to consume them.
HOW TO PICK
The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawberry. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green and fresh-looking.
HOW TO STORE
Always keep your strawberries in the fridge and only wash or remove the tops just before eating. Berries are best if they are taken out of the fridge half an hour before eating them.
