"My pick of the week is imperfect Navel oranges. August and September are the best months of the year for Aussie navels. A few good frosts in the growing areas sweetens the fruit.
This year, without the damaging floods of the past few, there is an enormous crop to get through. The supermarkets particularly insist on certain sizes and naturally want clean attractive fruit. On a year like this, that leaves a hell of a lot of blemished fruit, and fruit outside their size specs that does not have a home. Other uses such as juice cannot absorb the extra.
So, for the next fortnight and possibly up to a month, we are going to sell these perfectly good eating but somewhat ugly oranges for $0.99/kg - that’s right under $1.00 per kilo. That’s one third or less of the regular supermarket price, otherwise a lot of this fruit will end up as cattle food.
Do your budget a favour, do our farmers a favour, do our land fill a favour. They are fantastic eating and fantastic value!! "
