My pick this week is Queensland Strawberries.
It looks like a fantastic time ahead for our Queensland strawberries. Dry weather, cool to cold nights, and now some good warm days coming on, with daytime temperatures moving to the twenties - all point to really good fruit.
August is always the year's peak for strawberry sales, and this year will be no exception. Unlike summer strawberries, these winter berries eat fantastically, and the cool nights mean the fruit keeps really well. Fabulous for breakfast, to snack on through the day, or for dessert at night - they are my favourite winter fruit.
HOW TO PICK
The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump, and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawberry. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green, and fresh-looking.
HOW TO STORE
Always keep your strawberries in the fridge, and I recommend only washing or removing the tops just before eating. Berries are best if they are taken out of the fridge half an hour before eating them.
