Dave's Pick of the Week - New Season Royal Gala Apples

This week we have beautiful new season Gala apples in-store. All other apple varieties come from last year’s harvest and hence are around 8 months old. They are still OK to eat, but won’t have that crisp, fresh flavour of a new season apple. Our fruit is, at this time, grown in Bilpin in the Blue Mountains; about 50 kms as the crow flies, from most of our NSW stores. These apples are on our shelves within a couple of days of picking. Most of the larger chain stores have last years fruit (now 8 months old) or new season Victorian fruit which, some how, with the wet summer we are having, are soft and pale. Our new season, local Royal Gala apples are surprisingly inexpensive and ideal for the school lunch box. Crunchy, sweet, healthy and attractively priced as well – a great option this week.
