My pick this week is fennel. Traditionally part of the Mediterranean diet, it is now a real favourite with Australians. Shaved in salads, baked or braised - it is delicious and great just nibbled on on its own after a meal. Part of the carrot family, for most of my career fennel was a Winter only vegetable. With new varieties around, it is now available pretty much twelve months of the year. Nonetheless, the traditional larger bulbs, which are near the end of their season, are still my favourite and are still in prime condition; very inexpensive this week. This year the growing conditions have been very favourable, so both quality and price are very attractive, and this means great value at all Harris Farm stores this week.
