My pick this week is green beans.
In 51 years in this industry, I don’t think I have ever seen a price collapse like the one happening around green beans. This week, beans will retail for around 10% of the price they were getting just three weeks ago.
The peak price was driven by the torrential rains that occurred in autumn and wiped out the crop in Queensland. Those same rains also made planting for the winter crop near impossible. The price collapse this week is a reaction to beans bouncing back as we have the new crop in North Queensland starting to arrive in market.
There are only a few growers remaining up there and this week they have all commenced the harvest. That means that the stock is all first pick new crop beans, and they don’t get any better than that. I usually insist that HFM stocks only the hand-picked product as opposed to machine harvested stock. However, the machine product (which is always far cheaper) is exceptional this week – so I made an exception.
Put all those factors together and it means you can enjoy fresh beans at a price we have not seen for several years.
