This has been the biggest mango season Australia has seen with total production looking like being 11 million plus trays, the previous record being in the low 9 millions. Amazingly, due to problems in a couple of our export markets, an even larger percentage than normal was consumed domestically. We are now approaching our final weeks with a very few KPs now available and Brooks being the last variety. I like the Brooks to eat but because of their green colour, they are not an easy sell.
To identify the ripe fruit, look for a tinge of yellow and then let the feel of the fruit be your guide, the fruit should have a little give in it and not be as hard as a rock. They will stagger on for a couple of weeks and then nothing until late August for the next Aussie fruit from Darwin. I really don’t think you or Harris Farm should even bother with that Mexican fruit that fills the gap until then. The Taiwanese fruit we sometimes see late July is quite good, but I am not unhappy to have a seasonal gap for a couple of months.
