Pick of the Week - NSW North Coast Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the most popular berries in the world, and are round and small with smooth dark skin. The fruit is a consistent deep blue and is dusted in a fine, natural white powder known as "bloom" which is the blueberry's natural protection against the sun and a sign of freshness.

Despite their delicious taste and sweetness, blueberries are an extremely healthy food. A single serving contains numerous vitamins and minerals. Plus, blueberries are extremely low in calories, making them ideal for dieters. Blueberries also contain a soluble fibre called pectin that helps maintain a healthy digestive system.

Blueberries are generally hand-picked because they can easily be damaged.

HOW TO PICK
Look for smooth, firm, consistently round fruit which has a full bloom and is a deep consistent blue colour.

HOW TO STORE
Keep in the punnet and store in the crisper section of the fridge. The natural bloom on blueberries helps to protect their freshness and retain moisture, so rinse only lightly before use. Blueberries are highly perishable so do try to use them as soon as possible.
