Avocados, a dietitian's guide

Below Anna and Alex from The Biting Truth (two avocado-obsessed dietitians) give us the low-down on exactly what makes them so great for us…

Keep our hearts healthy
Avocados are rich in healthy (monounsaturated) fats, which help us to achieve healthier blood cholesterol levels, that is important for heart health.

Help look after our eyes
The amazing green and yellow colours of avocados come from the natural antioxidant pigments. These colours are fat soluble and play important role in maintaining our eye health.

Relieve the symptoms of arthritis
Avocados are a great source of vitamin E and the antioxidants present in them can help fight inflammation, which may relieve symptoms of arthritis.

Great for our digestive symptoms
The high fibre content in avocados helps to keep our digestive systems healthy and regular and can assist with weight loss (or maintenance).

A good food choice for people living with diabetes
The healthy fats and high fibre in avocados have been shown to help improve insulin sensitivity and help control blood glucose levels.

A good food choice for pregnant women
Avocados are rich in folate, a nutrient that plays a vital role in growth and cell development. Consuming a diet rich in folate is especially important for women of childbearing age. Eating just one quarter of an avocado each day accounts for 15% of the daily requirement.

Here’s 3 simple ways to start enjoying Avocado everyday:

    1. Mashed it up and spread it on your sandwich as a replacement to butter
    2. Diced it up and add it to delicious simple salads
    3. Mixed it with a little lemon juice, a pinch of salt, some cherry tomatoes and some diced Spanish onion for a delicious homemade guacamole dip!
