There are a number of market gardens in the Sydney Basin and our farmer friend Johnny Ngov is one of the best. Over the course of the year, Johnny delivers the freshest and best quality Asian greens, snow peas, sugar snap peas, snake beans, small tomatoes and Lebanese cucumbers to our stores.
It’s a family business with Johnny’s wife and their children, as well as his brothers and family working the 40 acres they have at Kemps Creek and Wedderburn. All of the vegies are hand-picked and packed early each morning and delivered directly to our stores.
‘Now, we concentrate on our little tomatoes’, he says. Cherry and grape tomatoes are always in good supply throughout late summer, but its early autumn when they are best. ‘They must just like the cooler weather’ says Johnny ‘because the quality at the moment is just fantastic.’
Johnny’s tip...for the best flavour, always store cherry and grape tomatoes at room temperature. When deep red and ripe, they’ll be sweet and bursting with juice.
