Dave's Market Update
In Veg
"For something very different this week, we have fantastic fresh beetroot in all our stores. These are young, tender veg at a price not seen for 5 years or so. Beetroot is extremely versatile and can be prepared in many different ways.
Still a flood of tomatoes coming now from all over the country. They are all great flavour and cheap, I think Truss at $2.99 kilo is very hard to beat. Still oodles of snacking tomatoes as well, the one I am enjoying the most at this stage are the sugar plum tomatoes. Pre-pack corn has eased in price and gets cheaper as the Victorian season gets going. All our herbs are plentiful and cheap.”

In Fruit
"The fruit season just gets better and better. Berries, particularly blackberries and raspberries are as good as I have seen them. Not really cheap but very reasonable and great quality.
Stone fruit supplies are also picking up. This week, we are selling very good imperfect apricots and nectarines, again cheap and good and the imperfect peaches from last week have also eased.
Grapes are now all Australian. The best eating of these are highly sought after by the retailers and are bringing really good money for the growers. Be wary of any grapes that are $12.00 or less a kilo and expect to pay up to $22.00 kilo for the best.
Remember, in this business you get what you pay for."

Dave's Pick of the Week - Truss Tomatoes
"My pick this week is Truss Tomatoes. The onset of Spring usually results in a Truss Tomato flush. This has been the case this year due to colder than usual temperatures in all the areas these tomatoes grow, the crops have been held back a few weeks.
We are finally off and running now, with Truss on promotion in all our stores this week!"

HOW TO PICK
Truss Tomatoes ripen on the vine, so they should have a rich deep red colour. The vine itself is in indicator of quality and should be a vibrant green.
HOW TO STORE
Store your toms at room temperature, out of the sun and with the stem side down to help prevent moisture from leaving, and bacteria from entering the tomato!
