Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Strawberries - 7 August 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“Again cold weather in growing areas is slowing supply of many veg lines. Mushrooms are in heavy supply in Sydney as are prepacked bags of carrots.

We have a couple of very well priced line of washed potatoes both reds and whites available this week. Brussels sprouts remain a bargain and broccolini also.

New season pumpkin (all varieties) are difficult as many are cutting pale and so some days will be unavailable until more mature crops become available.”

In Fruit

“Strawberries are our main focus again. We don’t have imported cherries and grapes are not great yet so the demand for good eating strawberries are dearer than normal for August. This is exacerbated by the blueberries still not coming in quantity.

Plenty of good apples, oranges and mandarins. However, it’s very hard to select which apple to buy, there are so many options now. I am enjoying the Bravos at home. We are coming to the end of the southern Imperial mandarins and I think the Honey Murcotts are now the go to mandarin.

Kiwi Gold remain a great choice for a breakfast fruit and we are seeing some early mangoes in the market, not very good at the moment. However, the heavy blossom augurs well for a massive season ahead."

Dave's Pick of the Week - Strawberries

“It’s most unusual for me to pick the same product of the week two weeks in a row. However, I think unusual circumstances have encouraged me to. In a normal year, we would have large quantities of imported grapes and cherries competing with strawberries for the consumer dollar. A combination of weather in growing areas and caution with the economy has meant far fewer arrivals from overseas and we are faced with the strawberry market being less than the demand for the fruit.

The fruit is extraordinarily high quality but nowhere the low price that would be normal for August. So, we have very flavoursome quality fruit on offer at the cheapest price we have seen for months but in fact dearer than is normal for August. I don’t think our customers will be disappointed once they taste the fruit.”

I bought strawberries last week and they were the best I have had in years and the smell of them was just amazing.
