Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Strawberries - 23 October 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

"We do have a few different options this week. Both cucumbers are really good value. Lebanese cucumbers have been very reasonable for a few weeks and continue to be so. This has resulted in telegraph cucumbers being over supplied and they will be on special this weekend and remain very reasonable for a while.
Asparagus though not quite as cheap as it has been, is still very reasonable. Snow peas are well supplied and are far better than last week.”

In Fruit

“This week, mangoes and fruit dominate sales. The weather in the territory has so far stayed dry and the fruit is eating fantastically. As always, it’s the Kensington Pride that take first place for the best eating fruit. They don’t win the beauty contest however they are the best eating.
All the berries are fantastic. This week, we can throw strawberries into the mix as well. Most unusual for this to happen pre-Melbourne Cup but it has. Papaya is ripening beautifully this week and prices have eased substantially.
Good quality avocados are plentiful too. I think the large fruit represents the best value this week. Peaches, though pricey are in the shops and we are seeing some very pricey lychees out there. Still a few mandarins about and navels are really good and sweet. Apples and pears are unchanged, so we have a very good fruit offering in store this week"

Dave's Pick of the Week - Strawberries

“My pick this week is strawberries. It is very unusual to see them fall in price at this time prior to Melbourne Cup which is a time of very high demand. Usually rain and hot weather up north brings the Queensland season to an end and the Victorian crops have only just started.

This year is different. It’s cooler than normal in Queensland and the Victorian fruit has come a little earlier than normal. Usually, we would be getting fruit over from West Australia but it is not needed this year. The outcome of all this is a large supply of fruit and with other berries all moderately priced, the strawberries will have to be sold at much lower prices to absorb this increased supply.  Enjoy a bargain with all your berries at all Harris farm stores this week!"
