Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week NSW - Josephine Pears - 14 August 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

"The broccoli/ broccolini option has reversed. Broccoli now represents better value after some weeks of very dear prices and mediocre quality. 1 kg prepacked carrots are again very good value and caulies are very reasonable and at a very good price .

Each year as spring arrives we get a real flush of English Spinach and it’s happening now. Prices have eased and we will have most stores on special either this week or in the coming weeks. It's also the time of the year that we get the best quality on this delicious vegetable."

In Fruit

"This week we are featuring Josephine pears. Unfortunately they won’t be on the shelves in our Qld stores until Friday. I am quite surprised that there is a price gap between the Packhams that we have all the time and the Josephine’s which in my view are a better eating, sweeter pear. All the citrus is now good, unfortunately no more imperial Mandarins however the Honey Murcotts do a good job replacing them. Blood oranges are fantastic.

Apples are great, and the small rockmelons we had last week are available again. Lemons especially imperfects remain in strong supply. Inclement weather in the growing areas has adversely affected the berry quality, they should be back to normal next week. Unusually good avocados are harder to find."

Dave's Pick of the Week NSW - Josephine Pears

“Josephine pears are a very sweet medium-sized pear. They finish earlier in the season than some of the other varieties and are eating very well right now. They have an amazing flavour and make an interesting and rewarding change to the far more common Packham pears. At their best and at a very attractive price in all HFM stores this week”.

HOW TO PICK
Pears ripen off the tree so you will normally need to give them a couple days after purchase for best eating. Ripe fruit will give a bit when pressed gently near the stem.

HOW TO STORE
Store at room temperature in a fruit bowl.
