Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - New Season Gala Apples & Rockmelons - 29 January

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

Broccoli volumes in the markets have increased.  This has seen the wholesale price drop substantially. This week, we have broccoli on promotion at a great price in all stores. Hand-picked beans have also eased in price this week.

Supply of coriander, shallots, Basil, English spinach, red radish, Continental parsley, snow peas, asparagus, imperfect eggplant and zucchini are well supplied this week.

Truss tomatoes are the standout in the tomato space and on promotion in all stores this week - great in quality and value."

In Fruit

"Back to school period this year is well timed with some great quality fruit and excellent value on offer. White grapes, bananas, new season William pears and Gala apples are the highlights.

New season William pears from Shepparton are eating better this week and have dropped in price.

Bananas from far north Queensland are in good supply and very good in quality.

White grapes from the Sunraysia region are in their peak of season and eating amazing. A real favourite for the Back-to-School period this week, we have white grapes on promotion in all stores.

In mangoes, this week we have excellent volumes of Silky mangoes. These mangoes come from Bundaberg in Queensland and whilst not always the prettiest looking fruit are always great eating.

Seedless watermelon shows no signs of slowing down with both quality and price - excellent again this week.

Peaches and nectarines again are great eating and markets are well supplied. For value, look at our imperfect range.

Dave's Pick of the Week

“This week, we’re highlighting both New Season Gala Apples and Rockmelons

New season Gala Apples

In time for the Back-to-School year, we have new season Gala apples. We kick of the new season apples with a small grower in Bilpin from the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

We have the lunch box size Gala apples on a fantastic promotion in all stores this week. Perfect size for Back-to-School.

Word of caution, this week, there will be many competitors advertising Royal Gala apples, however they will not all be new season as there still is some hang over fruit from last season.”

Rockmelons

Rockmelons are in their “sweet spot” this week. Coming from Mildura in Victoria, the fruit is in its peak of season. This variety is known as sucrose and is a firm, sweet eating fruit melon.

The fruit size is running on the large side and this week we are offering them up and a great price in all stores.”
