Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Lebanese Cucumbers - 16 October 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“We are now fully into our spring crops and Lebanese cucumbers have really fallen in price! The quality is fantastic and the price around a quarter of where it was 6 or 7 weeks ago.

Asparagus is so good and so cheap I can’t believe it. I haven’t seen these prices for a very long time. Coriander the most versatile of the herbs just keeps getting cheaper. Iceberg lettuce is superb.
About the only thing that may well be dearer this week are tomatoes. Some seed made its way into some glasshouses and although there is no danger from a food safety point of view, our growers yields are taking an almighty hit."

In Fruit

"Harris Farm shops are starting to get that summer smell about them. This is a fantastic week for mangoes, the industry has been a bit behind on enough ripe fruit, however this week we are fast catching up. All our stores have magnificent premium fruit special on the stacks as well as great value imperfect fruit. This is the week to take home a tray for the weekend, your family will love them.
Other stone fruit is getting underway and as well the first of the good eating peaches are in store now. Lychees and nectarines are not far away also!

As well the fantastic run on most berries continues. Strawberry supplies are gradually improving whilst blueberries continue to excel. Raspberries and blackberries are both great values as well.

For those customers who like blood oranges we are near the end of their season, so enjoy them whilst you can.  There is still ample citrus, apples and pears available, however some varieties of apples are coming to the end of their season. Watermelon is still a bit mixed in quality and anything premium is still bringing good money.”

Dave's Pick of the Week -  Lebanese Cucumbers

My pick this week is Lebanese cucumbers. The most commonly produced vegetable in the world. Annual global production now exceeds 60 million tonnes.

Here in Australia, this veg hits its peak for taste and quality in the springtime. They are grown in glasshouses all over the country and become more and more popular every year. The old-fashioned green cucumber that my generation grew up with is very close to being a thing of the past.
Traditionally, Lebanese cucumbers can be (and this year has been), very dear in winter. With the onset of warmer weather in spring, they just abound all over the country. So this week - a fantastic spring vegetable that is great quality, and great prices that is high in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and K.”
