Dave's Market Update & Pick of the Week - Bananas - 18 September 2024

Dave's Market Update

In Veg

“This week, we have an amazing special on Cup mushrooms. Cup mushrooms are in great supply in the markets and this week we are retailing cup mushrooms at a ticket not often seen. The Australian asparagus season is in full swing.  After having to endure the imported product through winter there is an appreciation for just how fantastic our home-grown asparagus is ! There are good quantities available, and asparagus represents great value this week.

This year, pumpkin prices have been as expensive as I have seen them for years. Largely due to the below average winter temperatures, pumpkin crops didn’t have the yields.  Great news this week with our most popular pumpkin - Kent pumpkin at half the retail price of last week !!"

The spring season heralds the start of the leafy vegetable crops. This week, Dutch carrots, kale, coriander, silverbeet, continental parsley and English spinach all represent excellent value. Quality is sensational. Other veg lines that are good value this week include baby broccoli, twin pack cos, celery, tele cues, cocktail potatoes, loose beetroot, asparagus."

In Fruit

"Berries are still going strong this week. Blueberries being the standout . Blueberries are eating fantastic, and I strongly recommend spending a little extra and indulge in our premium blueberries range . They are in fact not expensive and are great value, the fruit is large hard, crunchy, and very sweet and worth every bit of the small premium in price.

Pristine conditions in the strawberry growing areas around southeast Queensland have volumes continuing to be strong and quality excellent. There is excellent value in strawberries this week.

Blood oranges are coming to the tail end of the season. It has been an excellent season to date and the fruit is still very good. Coming primarily from Griffith in the Riverina blood oranges make are terrific for juicing or simply throw on top on a salad.

Have a look out for our new variety of mandarin. Called a “Summerina”, the fruit comes from Mildura in the Riverina district. They are fabulous. Sweet, seedless and easy to peel. Great fruit for the kid’s lunch boxes.”

Dave's Pick of the Week -  Bananas

“This week we have bananas on special in all stores. Bananas have been expensive all year, and this is the first significant drop in the market we have seen. Some favourable weather conditions have seen volumes of bananas steadily increase into the markets over recent weeks.

The banana crops are transitioning from the winter crops to spring. There is still some “dull” fruit on the market, but rest assured the eating quality of this fruit is fantastic mainly due the fact the fruit has been hanging on the trees for extended periods during the colder months.”
