IN FRUIT
Another excellent fruit week coming up, the wet weather in Sydney will slow sales down and we may see some price reductions as a result as the week goes on. Firstly we have a fantastic across the board special on Imperfect Mangoes. As I always say blemish on a mango is only skin deep and you do not eat the skin. We have this fruit at a red hot price this week! The Imperfect Black Amber Plums that were so popular last week will continue in the stores for most if not all this week also. Again I would encourage the use of Aussie limes as opposed to imported lemons. There are some very nice reasonably priced imported pomegranates in the stores this week. The new season Aussie product is about six or eight weeks away. The good news is that the big drop in temperature means there will be very good local Gala apples available this week. Galas are the first apple of the season and they will be in store at present within 24 or 48 hours of picking. This makes them ideal for a healthy, nutritious and tasty addition to the school lunch pack. Any other apple will be old season. Peaches, Nectarines, Grapes and figs all continue to be excellent value, great flavour and keeping well. The stone fruit is now at its best and in my view the Amber Jewel plums from Forbes are the pick of the plums and indeed possibly of the whole stone fruit range this week.
IN VEGETABLE
Again things remain difficult with fresh vegies. We do have some very good Dutch Cream potatoes this week, I love growing them at my farm because they are just so good to eat especially if you like mashed spuds. I personally would recommend them over our normal brushed potato and this week they will not cost you any more than the brushed and may in fact be cheaper in some stores. There may even be some cheaper Kestrel potatoes later this week in the smaller size range in some stores. As I have been advising our customers not to store strawberries for long but rather to buy them as and when they wish to use them I would also extend this advice to our salad lines especially mixed lettuces, baby spinach and rocket and in fact the same could be said for our herbs.
