IN FRUIT
We generally don’t get too excited about imported fruit or vegetables but this week we are. The imported cherries from USA are superb. Every year in late May and the first half of June there are Californian cherries and they are nothing special. Then at the end of June and all of July, if there is no rain, we get these amazing cherries from Washington state. The best growing conditions possible means this year they are a little bit earlier than normal but they are the best I have had. Red seedless grapes are the best in grapes, all the pears and apples are good and we are now in the crossover time for mandarins where the fantastic Queensland Imperials are finished and the southern fruit is not quite ready so we have different varieties of mandarins which not all people enjoy.
IN VEGETABLE
We have a couple of different products this week that we have not had for some time. Firstly we have some beautiful Dutch Cream potatoes from North Western Tasmania that are just fantastic. Cheaper than any other loose potatoes we sell, they are an excellent cooking potato at an unbeatable price. In tomatoes we have our 500g punnets of petite tomatoes at a great price. This week they will be cheaper than truss but far sweeter and better to eat. The other great line this week is cos lettuce, cheaper than iceberg they are all grown in NSW mostly from the Sydney basin. The exceptionally mild winter to date has meant this local product is excellent. Also good value in vegies this week will be found in green capsicums, English spinach, all beans, corn and leeks.
